Archeogologist Emma Richardson of the Joara Foundation visited with 8^th grade students at East McDowell on Friday, September 9^th. She spoke with students about archaeology with a focus on the findings at The Berry Site in Morganton NC. The Berry Site in 1567 was a Catawba Indian village called Joara. In 1567, Spanish explorer Captain Juan Pardo came to Joara and built Fort San Juan. Ms. Richardson described the various artifacts found at The Berry Site and demonstrated how they the scientific method was used to make these discoveries.

We just scheduled author Alan Zullo to present to students at East McDowell Junior. Mr. Zullo will present to students in October. Mr. Zullo has written over 100 nonfiction books. At the East McDowell Library students may have up to four items checked out. The checkout period is for two weeks. Fines are charged. Fines are five cents per day after the due date for regular checkout items and ten cents per day after the due date for reference items.

The East McDowell Junior High Battle of the Books team were McDowell County Champions this year. They competeed in the regional competition. Congratulations on a great year.
